Shell content

Shells occur in many land based sand and gravels as well as marine. BS EN 12620 puts no limit on shell content on fine aggregate.

Two categories are specified in BS EN 12620 for the coarse aggregate, less than 10% and greater than 10%. In reality shell content of UK marine aggregates falls well below 10%. Shell, like limestone is predominantly calcium carbonate which is stable in concrete.
